RenaissanceRe to Host New York Recovery and Resilience Leadership Forum

June 1, 2016

PEMBROKE, Bermuda--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jun. 1, 2016-- RenaissanceRe Holdings Ltd. (NYSE:RNR) will convene nearly 200 leading policy makers, insurance industry experts, scientists, environmentalists, and members of the media to discuss the recovery of lower Manhattan and lessons learned since Superstorm Sandy at the “New York Recovery & Resilience Leadership Forum,” which will take place on June 2, 2016 at The New York Stock Exchange. The Forum will be conducted through RenaissanceRe’s Risk Sciences Foundation, which it created to support advanced scientific research in atmospheric risks, the development of risk mitigation techniques to safeguard communities, efforts that reduce the economic turmoil following disasters, and organizations that promote physical and financial resiliency.

RenaissanceRe CEO Kevin O’Donnell said, “Advancing a shared understanding of the science surrounding natural catastrophes and promoting investments in resiliency to protect lives and property from major events is in RenaissanceRe’s DNA. As the 2016 Atlantic storm season commences and with the impacts of Sandy still being felt, this Forum and these conversations are timely. RenaissanceRe will continue to work with our clients, brokers and other partners worldwide to accelerate resiliency and to close the natural disaster insurance coverage gap that leaves communities too exposed.”

The Forum will cover a number of important issues raised by Sandy, including New York's and the region’s recovery, efforts to promote resilience before the inevitable next storm, the benefits of scientifically sound construction and mitigation, the positive impact of endemic coastal ecosystems and “natural buffers,” and the role of the private sector in fostering adaptation and sound rebuilding. Speakers at the symposium, alongside executives from RenaissanceRe, will include the Hon. Michael Dunkley, Premier of Bermuda; Katherine Greig, Deputy Director at the New York City Mayor’s Office of Recovery & Resiliency; John M. Huff, Director of the Missouri Department of Insurance, Financial Institutions and President of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners; Samantha Medlock of the White House Office of Management and Budget; Collin O’Mara, CEO of the National Wildlife Foundation; and Julie Rochman, President & CEO of the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety. The Forum is fully subscribed but limited additional media attendance is possible.

“This Forum, the latest in our award-winning series of free-of-charge outreach events, underscores RenaissanceRe’s commitment to proactive collaborations with private and public leaders to help make our communities safer and more resilient, recover faster, and to reduce the economic toll of the devastating impacts of events like Storm Sandy," said Stephen Weinstein, Group General Counsel of RenaissanceRe and Chair of its Risk Sciences Foundation. “The rising risks of natural disasters are too material to be solved by any one stakeholder group and open discussion among government officials, business leaders, researchers, environmentalists, and others is critical to both identifying solutions and seeing to their implementation. We are grateful for the participation of so many committed leaders at this Forum.”
